Meeting the Challenges and Opportunities

Sustainability is becoming a key issue for organizations of all sizes. Both the public and private sector are facing increasing pressure to implement new sustainability programs, improve upon existing initiatives, and track and report their “carbon footprint”.

The UBC/UW Summer Institute in Sustainability is an intensive professional development program targeted to administrators in corporations, local and provincial governments, and universities and colleges who wish to integrate sustainability as a core value in their organization. Academic experts and working professionals will help you understand how to develop sustainability policies and procedures that are mindful of public policy, stakeholder interest, and the bottom line.

A Full Week of Activities

Through lectures, case studies, workshops and on-site excursions, you will gain a deeper understanding of the scientific, economic and social-behavioural issues surrounding sustainability. Learn how to set goals, develop and implement action plans, and measure and track results. Lectures focus on sustainability planning and applying sustainability practices to energy, transportation, water, reduction and recycling, and other important areas.

The UBC/UW Summer Institute in Sustainability takes place over five days and one evening at the UBC Point Grey campus in Vancouver and includes:

  • lectures by leading sustainability experts in developing and managing sustainability programs
  • case-study workshops that assist participants in formulating innovative initiatives that have an impact
  • field excursions to examine green buildings and on-site sustainability projects
  • One-Hundred Mile Dinner on Sunday night to welcome participants and introduce presenters
