Published by International Ocean Institute (original article)

The majority of the world’s population lives within sixty kilometers of the coast line - and this portion is steadily increasing. Yet the coastal ecosystem is fragile, and the combination of development and climate change can cause harm to the priceless natural resources that draw people to the oceans. This conference, for coastal city leaders, managers and academics, will feature discussions on many aspects of the human/urban piece of the coastal environment.

The International Ocean Institute-USA and the city of St. Petersburg, FL, are hosting a Coastal Cities Summit on November 17-20, 2008, to address the complex challenges that coastal city leaders face as populations increase, resources are depleted, and the impacts of climate change are felt. The Coastal Cities Summit intends to bring together to discuss environmental, social, economic, and public policy challenges and viable solutions.
