John KaufmannJohn Kaufmann was the lead staffer for the groundbreaking Portland, Oregon Peak Oil Task Force (2006-2007), which looked at the implications of declining oil and gas supplies for the city.

John Kaufmann is Senior Buildings Energy Manager for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Prior to that, he led energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts with the Oregon Department of Energy for 29 years, helping to make Oregon a national leader. He was one of the nation's first state-level solar energy specialists and is a recipient of the American Planning Association Professional Achievement Award. In 2006 he was lead staff for the City of Portland's groundbreaking Peak Oil Task Force.

John has spoken to government and public audiences across the country about peak oil and the experiences of the Portland task force. He has two basic presentations; each lasts 20-40 minutes, and they are combinable as a single 45-60 minute presentation:

  • the facts, data and driving forces behind peak oil and peak natural gas;
  • the current and future impacts of peak oil on global, national and local economies
  • the potential for other energy sources to supply global demand
  • the potential for planning and economic behavior changes to to reduce global energy demand

Descending the Oil Peak: The Portland Peak Oil Task Force Report

  • brief overview based on the Peak Oil: Causes and Prospects slideshow
  • background, structure and process of the Task Force
  • key questions and key impacts discussed by the Task Force
  • recommendations of the Task Force
